Research on vehicle handling stability calls for many rounds repeated tests, which not only cost consumption, extend design cycle, moreover, some experiments even cannot put into effect only because their security. But, by using the virtual simulation methods, once the vehicle model is being finished, it becomes simple to modify the design parameters for resimulation. Today, simulation technology is increasingly widely used in automotive engineering fields, more and more mature computer simulation theory and software for high-performance simulation are widely used in the handling stability analysis and research. Combined with the accessorial design means, they can be directly used in the guidance and participation in the analysis, optimization and improvement of automotive design parameters. In this paper, by introducing the multi-body system dynamics theory and research methods, and multi-body dynamics software MSC.ADAMS to a prototype for an A-class car, the author firstly establish a suspension and steering systems model. In order to make the model more vivid, suspend the flexibility of some local parts, the author does a simulation study on the movement characteristics of the suspension and steering system. The study includes movement characteristics of steering system under the suspension of beating and coupling, based on which the author made a suspension of related geometric analysis parameter changes curve.By using ADAMS/CAR through the revision of template parameters and the highlight point, the author establish a front suspension systems, steering systems, rear suspension systems, brake systems, powertrain, body, tires, and other subsystems to set up vehicle model. They do open-loop simulation against vehicle model in accordance with the provisions stated in GB/T6323-1994, including Steering wheel angle step input, steering wheel angle pulse input, return ability test, steady static circular test procedure, and joined the driver-car-path of the closed-loop system research, including steering efforts test procedure, pylon course slalom test which follow the path of the response properties. Judging from the test scores given, according to the standard in QC/T480-1999, the car is proved to be high performance in the handling and stability. In short, multi-body system dynamics software—MSC.ADAMS provides a effective tool for vehicle handling stability study. With the continuous development of the vehicle dynamics and computer simulation technology, virtual prototyping technology, with multi-body system dynamics as its core, will play a greater role in the vehicle dynamics and design.
