A new algorithm of reservoir operation optimization, cultural algorithm, is introduced in this paper. Then the algorithm is applied in the optimal dispatching of the Three Gorges—Gezhouba cascaded hydropower stations. The major work of this dissertation is as following:Firstly, this paper introduces cultural algorithm, which is good at solving non-linearity optimization problem with multi-variable and multi-restriction. The algorithm is a new emerging overall optimization algorithm based on swarm intelligence in recent years. The algorithm contains population space and belief space, and a link to connect the two spaces as accept function and influence function. Population space support any model groups based on swarm, belief space may use any symbol to describe the knowledge used to solve problems. as to the characters above, generic algorithm, evolutional programming algorithm and differential evolution algorithm may be embedded in the population space optimization of cultural algorithm respectively, which are the genetic cultural algorithm, cultural evolutional programming algorithm and cultural differential evolution algorithm. The three cultural algorithms together with basic genetic algorithm calculate an optimization example respectively. Optimization results indicate that cultural algorithm have good feasibility and practicability, and that the algorithm has remarkable superiority.Secondly, because the domestic research on cultural algorithm just starts, and there has not been any application in reservoir optimal operation, we must verify the feasibility of the algorithm in the field in advance. This paper is based on the model of cascaded short-term optimization of the Three Gorges and the Gezhouba stations. When the Three Gorges discharges some water, the paper optimizes the Gezhouba station by the most generated energy for the goal. The results indicate that cultural algorithm has good performance in cascaded reservoir optimization. Especially, cultural differential evolutional algorithm has the excellence of rapid searching rate and strong searching ability. it is suitable to apply into the reservoir optimization.Thirdly, the paper researches on the cascaded short-term optimization of the Three Gorges and Gezhouba stations. By studying the reverse regulation of the Gezhouba station, this paper gets the maximum amplitude of the Three Gorges peak shaving. Then, the paper chooses several conditions in peak shaving, calculates for goals of the maximum generated energy and the most generation benefit considering peak-valley price. In the end, the two reverse regulation ways of the Gezhouba station are reached.
