Along with the development of the global economy integrating, the continue terminal has become an important node of the transportation and the supply chain. The yard gate system in container terminals is the operation channel for tractors to carry containers to move into or out of the container terminal and is the important role in the operations of container terminal. Actually, the performance of the gate system plays an important role in enhancement of service quality of container terminals.In this paper, based on gate operating practice of a Shenzhen container terminal, the research is to work out the way of improving the container terminal gate capacity. The paper first reviews the domestic and foreign research statue on Container Terminal System and draw out the technical line of the paper. Secondly, the paper analyses the operating system of the container terminal gate, including the functions of gate, the gate operating workflow and related evaluation indexes. Next, the third chapter of the paper takes an empirical research on the operating system of a Shenzhen container terminal gate: The existing gate workflow of the container terminal has been introduced; the advantages and disadvantages of the existing workflow has been analyzed; the paper studies the impacting factors on the operating efficiency of the gate system and emphases the significance of the container terminal gate workflow optimization. The fourth chapter of this paper is the quantitative research of the queuing system a Shenzhen container terminal gate, which is not only the focus of the article, but also the difficulty of the article. Firstly, this chapter briefly introduces the basic theory of queuing theory, focusing on the principle of M/G/S/∞/∞/ FCFS queuing system and its related indicators; secondly, draw out the law of outside tractors arrival and the statistical distribution of the gate service time by use of statistical data from January to June in 2008; On this basis, figure out the related indicators of this container terminal gate operating queuing system and make the sensitivity analysis of uncertainty factors; finally, the chapter comes to the conclusion that the most effective way of raising the through capacity of container terminal gate is to shorten the average grounding and pickup time at the gate. Based on the above study and the comparative analysis of domestic and foreign container terminal gate workflow, the last part of article draws out the specific optimizing measures for this container terminal gate workflow, that is, tractor pre-advice system. And put tractor pre-advice system into the practice of this container terminal, the simulated result has proved that this optimizing measure can really improve the efficiency of container terminal gate operations, thereby increasing the gate and the whole terminal through capacity.
