The highest and only peak in Chenshan Botanical Garden, the new botanical garden of Shanghai municipal located at Sheshan Scenic Area, Chenshan Hill has historically been one of Shanghai's landmark landscape- the Nine Hills and Three Ponds. Since the beginning of 20th century, it has been used as a site for the production of constructional stone, and its environment severely damaged-One side of the hill hacked was away, and a deep pit was created on the ground near the hillside. When the mining was banned, ecology began to come back a little. In 2005, the surrounding area was chosen as the site of a new botanical garden. Chenshan Hill, being an important element in the topography, was also included in the core exhibition area. The planners claim to develop here the most attractive garden in the botanical garden. This paper is developed around the project of Chenshan West Quarry Landscape Design, with research, analysis and design proposal. By the research on applicable theory in landscape renovation and ecological restoration of deserted quarry site, principle of searching for the capability of site is founded; the analysis of area and site focuses on digging out the ecology and cultural value, to give guideline to design; in the end a design proposal is generated from the aspect of restoring both ecological and human value of the west quarry site.As the only source for near ground rocks, most hills in the Nine Hills and Three Ponds group are now facing similar problems as Chenshan Hill. The generalized method of converted usage has applicable use to these hills as well. It is the author's hope that these remnants of historical landscape could go through rational, well-organized redevelopment. The discussion of how to combine ecological restoration with landscape renovation, of the conversion of utilization method of landscape, and the contemplation on the restoration of less-valued human landscape, is also of referential value to similar projects.
