Research of comprehensive automation system of Shaoguan smelt factory and power plant is discussed in this paper. Aimed at practicality, facilitation and intellectualization, an exoteric, normal power plant colligation automation system with a hierarchical distributed structure is designed. Modern microcomputer protection technology, remote measure, controls and communication technique based on network and video, database, optoelectronic technology are closely combined in this system. Therefore, automation operation and management level of the power plant is improved.Firstly, based on the analysis and comparison of comprehensive automation system structure of several power plants, and combined their develop trend and electrical equipment distribution structure with the concrete needs of Shaoguan smelt factory and power plant, a power plant comprehensive automation system with a hierarchical distributed structure is researched and designed. The whole system has clear structure and high reliability.Secondly, object oriented programming methods and gradational structures are adopted in system application support platform. This application support platform has many advantages:the management and analysis level of the power plant are improved efficiently; the mal-operation and mal-judgment are cut down or avoided; the time of equipment blackout, examine and repair is shortened; the devotion of manpower and material resources is economized. Also, implementation technology of some key modules are analyzed and studied, such as data collection and release, data exhibition and operation order etc.Thirdly, according to the principal of ensuring the reliability, consistency, common sharing and fact of the data, an object oriented high performance multiple layer distributed database system is researched. The data management, data query and data security are described in detail. This database system is proposed to enhance the stability, real time and openness of the system. Consequently, the safety in exchange information of corporation is guaranteed and the rapidity of information is improved. Meanwhile, in order to further improve the information level of Shaoguan smelt factory, all the information of automation system and DCS system is collected for users to share. So the efficiency of using information is extremely improved. Hence, the safety, stability and reliability of the power supply system in Shaoguan smelt factory are further ensured and the operation maintenance cost is also decreased.Lastly, hardware platform and network platform is researched and designed. Hardware platform includes electric parameter measurement and control system and microcomputer protection system. Network platform using RS-485 bus technology and IEC-60870-5-104 communication protocol, which ensures accuracy, speediness, safety of data transmission.The system mentioned above has already been operated, which has a good condition. The system not only has strong function, high degree of automatization, fast response and high reliability, but also has easy operation and good expansibility. Consequently, the safety, stability, reliability, management and accident analysis level of power supply system in the power plant is effectively improved, besides operation maintenance cost is decreased.
