A novel solar assisted multi-functional heat pump system (SAMHPS for short) is proposed based on the idea of making full use of energy. It's creatively designed for providing hot water and air conditioning with high efficient and full use of devices, in which the solar energy is used as a subsidiary resource pool.This paper reviews the evolution of heat pump applications and main direction of research and development. With the investigation of social and industrial background, we make a discussion on the market future of SAMHPS products. And that seems very bright, since SAMHPS owns many merits on energy conservation, economics and safety. The system was designed for providing seven functions, but only three heat exchangers, one set of throttle device and one compressor are used. The functions include air heating with solar assisting, air heating only, water heater, air cooling, air cooling and water heating, water cooler and solar water heater. And the first and the third are the most powerful core functions on energy conservation.A system simulation study on SAMHPS was conducted based on a steady-state model. The results demonstrated the high efficiency of SAMHPS in core function modes.An experimental rig was set up for testing the seven functions of SAMHPS. For acquiring the instantaneous experimental data. we wrote a set of software using Visual Basic, visual instrument and serial communication technology.Experiment has been conducted on the seven functions of SAMHPS. From the analysis of experimental data, we could obtain some key factors which make big influences on system efficiency. And as a result, we know SAMHPS works in high efficiency in core functions, which is corresponding to simulation results.We summarized this paper and discussed some problems which should been solved in the future in the final chapter. In a word, SAMHPS is very suitable for using in domestic condition and business field which need hot water and air conditioning.
