With the increasingly intense market competition, rapid design technology for mechanical products is of great importance for the manufacturing enterprises to improve their ability to respond to market demands quickly and to occupy advantage position in the competition. In this paper, the theory, methods of rapid design of mechanical products and the present status of crawler crane are studied, and the crawler crane rapid design architecture of multi-technology fusion is established.Advantages in object oriented knowledge representation for complicated mechanical products were analyzed in detail and the presentation method for mechanical products on object oriented represent was found based on research of characteristics of mechanical products, an extensible integrated structure of knowledge is build upon classify of the design knowledge.An open integrating mode of knowledge driven rapid design system which based on research of Solid Edge data structure and ActiveX automation technique is proposed and some advanced design methods such as parameterization, modularization are involved in.Besides, some typical problems are solved during the research, such as the rule of knowledge presentation, the document format of knowledge information, the division of module, and the automatic assemble and creation of 3d model.Crawler crane is a fully developed construction machine, which has methodic frame, explicit design and also, an urgent need for market's rapid response. The rapid design system of crawler crane based on knowledge driven was founded and an example was given to illuminate the feasibility of the method. With the system, designers can manipulate the crane model promptly through controlling of the parent-key-dimensions, which brings fewer burdens, shorter period, less cost and more profit.
