The construction of wind power, nuclear power, chemical and other heavy industries promotes the development of large tonnage crawler cranes. The large tonnage crawler crane has more requirements about its travelling mechanism. As the support of the whole crane, travelling mechanism must have enough bearing capacity and driving force to make the crane travel steadily.The large tonnage crawler crane needs huge driving force but short distance travelling. Nowadays, the travelling mechanism is driven by hydraulic motor, which is hard to creat enough torque to drive the crane and the advantage of continuous rotation is not made full use. Considering that, this paper puts forward a method using the hydraulic cylinder to drive the travelling mechanism, taking advantage of the huge thrust it can produce. To overcome the same travelling resistance, the cost of a hydraulic cylinder is10%of a hydraulic motor.The research of this paper is based on the QUY750crawler crane. The parameters of travelling mechanism are calculated according to the design basis. Different kinds of projects driven by hydraulic cylinder are designed and compared and the final project is determined. Since the operating condition of travelling mechanism driven by hydraulic cylinder is different from the original one, the strength of main bearing structure is checked based on finite element theory. The model of track frame, track plate, supporting base, driving teeth and the trapezoidal beam is built in ANSYS. Load and boundary condition is applied to make the strength checking. Because of the limitation of one hydraulic cylinder’s working stroke, two hydraulic cylinders are used to drive the crane travelling continuously by turns. Dynamic simulations of travelling mechanisms driven by hydraulic motor and cylinder are conducted, in order to analyse velocity fluctuation. Velocity diagroms are gotten to discuss correctness and feasibility of travelling mechanism driven by hydraulic cylinder.This paper designs a travelling mechanism of QUY750driven by hydraulic cylinder, conducts finite element analysis and dynamic simulation of the travelling mechanism. The research work provides reference for design and simulation of travelling mechanism of large tonnage crawler cranes.
