In order to reduce the workload of the designer and shorten the development cycleof horizontal directional drilling (HDD) crawler travel mechanism, a rapid designsystem for horizontal directional drilling crawler travel mechanism based on theknowledge reuse has been developed by using Pro/E4.0and Visual Studio2005in thisdissertation. To develop the rapid design system for the main line, I have done a detailedresearch on the aspects of determining the key design rules and design parameters ofcrawler travel mechanism, researching knowledge reuse and developing rapid designsystem.(1) The design and the modeling of horizontal directional drilling crawler travelmechanism. The crawler travel mechanism is designed by using an enterprise’shorizontal directional drilling technology parameters, then the design rules andparameters are determined and the crawler travel mechanism model is drawn in Pro/E,these tasks provide the basic model for rapid design system.(2) The research of knowledge reuse. Knowledge obtaining and expression ofhorizontal directional drilling crawler travel mechanism are researched. Research oncrawler travel mechanism based on knowledge reuse is carried on by adopting reasoningtechnology based on Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and Rule-Based Reasoning (RBR).The knowledge library of crawler travel mechanism is established and a series of relatedmanagement methods of knowledge library are formulated.(3) The research and development of rapid design system for crawler travelmechanism. Based on the theory of knowledge reuse, the rapid design system forhorizontal directional drilling crawler travel mechanism is established by using thesecondary development technology of Pro/E, database technology and parametric designtechnology. The function of the system is verified through examples.The rapid design system for horizontal directional drilling crawler travelmechanism can reuse the existing mature products of crawler travel mechanism byadopting CBR and reuse the existing design knowledge of crawler travel mechanism byadopting RBR, thus a horizontal directional drilling crawler travel mechanism modelwhich can satisfy the customers’ requirements will be quickly generated. The design efficiency of the crawler travel mechanism is improved effectively and the quickreaction capability to the market is enhanced.
