The southwest river basin systems, which include the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Lancang River, Nujiang River and Yarlung Zangbo River, are important components of the national river basin system. Lancang River, Nujiang River and Yarlung Zangbo River are three international rivers. To propel the development of the human settlement in southwest river basins is an important way to develop and open up these areas.Transportation construction is an essential part of the development of the human settlement in river basin areas. The research topic of this paper is a sub-project of "The Integrated Transportation" which belongs to the National Natural Science Foundation Project "The Research on the Exploitation and Development of the Human settlement in Southwest River Basin Areas" chaired by my supervisor. Traffic construction has important roles in the development of human settlement. Transportation systems are highly supportive to the human settlement. Actually, transportation systems are essential infrastructure for the societal and urban construction. Advanced transportation construction is directly related to the economical development of southwest river basin areas.Based on the characteristics of each river basin, this paper starts from the exploration of the relationship concerning cities (towns), rivers and traffic. It proceeds to draw out the spatial structures of the City Group from the angle of river basin, and further explores the traffic network structures. Finally, this paper raises some strategies on traffic development in light of the traffic network, traffic means, industrial distribution, traffic management and investment, so as to support the development of Southwest river basin regions.Regarding current situations, the author has consulted a large amount of information available, and conducted some field studies, so that a clear delineation of the current traffic situation has been grasped. Through an analysis of the traffic patterns, traffic volume, traffic organization and trend of traffic development, the study points out the current problems in traffic development and further conducts an analysis of these problems.Regarding the relationship between traffic and City Groups, this study mainly research into this relationship in light of the specialties of river basin regions and the scientific framework of human settlement development. First and foremost, the paper focuses on the specialties of river basins, especially Southwest river basins, such as the integrity, the regionality, the network, non-sustainability. Then the study researches into the unification of traffic and City Groups under the framework of human settlement. At last the study analyzes the interaction between traffic and City Group, and sums up the mutually interactive relationship.Regarding the spatial structure of the City Group, the study mainly investigates the classification of spatial structure types. The author classifies the spatial structure into differentiating modes according to the difference of spatial structures and investigates the spatial structure of City Group by applying methods from typology. First, the definition of spatial structure of the City Group, the modes and configuration of development, are minutely explored. Then, the study conducts relative research into the characteristics and influence factors of the spatial structure in the City Group. The spatial structure types of the City Group in river basin regions are classified. According to these types, further classification of City Group is made and different types of City Group in southwest river basin regions are differentiated.Regarding the network structure and development strategy of transportation, this study investigates the modes of traffic network modes in different spatial structures of City Group. Based on these researches, the author presents some strategies on traffic development, which is the core part of this research. First, in light of the aforementioned classification of spatial structures and different modes of spatial structure, the author designs relative network structures of transportation. Then, on a comprehensive study of the industrial layout, traffic means, traffic network, traffic management and investment the author explores the development strategies of transportation concerning different transportation networks, so as to propel and optimize the transportation network structure development.Regarding the case study, the author takes for example the Chengdu-Chongqing City Group where many river networks exist. The study investigates the organization of the transportation network structure and explores the development strategies from various angles, so as to realize the network of transportation structure and improve the transportation of this City Group.
