With the sustained growth in air traffic, the contradiction between airspace capacity and the actual demand is becoming increasingly prominent. Airspace planning departments is increasingly facing the pressing issue that how to use the airspace resources effectively. As one of the core technologies in air traffic management system, airspace sector planning technology is a specific technique to resolve the effective allocation of airspace resources, and the terminal area airspace structure optimization problem is a key in the optimization of the whole airspace. The airspace sector planning is the process that the controlled airspace is divided into basic control units in accordance with the relevant state documents by airspace planning departments. It is urgent to solve the problem that how to plan the scientific terminal area airspace structure. In this paper, firstly, the original data collection ways of terminal area sector optimization are elaborated and practiced on the basis of previous studies and the theory of traffic survey. Combining the character of the terminal area, the general theory and principles of division of terminal area sectors are proposed, and single function of sectors is bounded into the constraint system to make it more in line with the actual needs of sector division. The optimization division model of terminal area sectors is established with Ant Algorithm. Finally, according to the actual situation of the sector of Kunming terminal area, optimization of sector division is achieved using computer program, and the result of sector division is given.
