The retractable roof structure, a new type of space structure, can meet people's requirement for multi-purpose stadium. Compared with the traditional structure, it has a lot of unique advantages. It can make sure games and public movements to be hold without weather influence. In addition, the construction and application of such structure can bring considerable economic benefits. However, the research of retractable roof structure is lagging far behind engineering practice. The reference in this field is relatively scarce. A lot of problems need studying and solving.In this paper, the author has introduced the history of the development of the retractable roof structure and current research. After that, he has introduced its structural system, moving manners, load types and so on. The calculation model is 130m span retractable roof structure of sphere crown shape which has been established by dimensional modeling software CATIA. The finite element software ABAQUS is adopted to simulate and analyze. A program compiled in Python is used to define beam normal. The surface loads were translated into equivalent node loads by 3D3S software. After that, the equivalent node loads were produced into ABAQUS by the Python program.The author used ABAQUS to analyze the static characteristics and stability of the retractable roof structure. In analysis, 172 kinds of different analysis jobs were carried out. These jobs include 60 kinds of static characteristics analysis and 112 kinds of stability analysis with diffent element types, boundary conditions, load cases and other conditions. In stability of the structure analysis, 112 jobs were carried out, considering different values of geometric imperfection and nonlinear material. Finally, the plenty of simulation analysis brought about many useful conclusions which would be helpful to engineering practice.
