Ruin Landscape And The Continuation Of Memory

Urban Ruin-landscape is composed by building ruins and the natural ruin environment of the city. Ruin-landscape is the carrier of a city's history and the living memories of its citizens. Protecting and reusing ruin landscape equals to rescue a city's history and making the city's memory keeping lasting.First the study analysis the significance of the ruin-landscape to a city, including its properties as a special recourse; the significance of ruin-landscape in terms of time and space; the important role that ruin-landscape played in decomposing SUPER TOPOLOGICAL SPACE in modern cities; the connection between ruin-landscape and the time-and-space diversity of a city; the role ruin played on helping people who live in the city identify themselves. Then the study analysis the values of ruin-landscape from three aspects: historical and cultural value, aesthetic value and economical value. Then on the basis of the first two parts, it induced the methods of reviving ruin-landscape. They are taking advantage of the atmosphere of ruins, including tragedy atmosphere, mysterious atmosphere and nostalgic atmosphere; creating psychological tension with ruins; reorganize and reinterpret the original landscape factors flexibly when facing a complicated and large-scaled ruin site. To make it clear, each method is illustrated with a practical example. Inspiring by ruin, the last part introduces a way to design landscape. That is Design-with-Ruin-Crisis which means in the process of landscape design the designer should coordinate the design result by using passing time as a standard. Not only should the designer consider the born state of the landscape in mind but also its ruin state and make sure the landscape is also beautiful and valuable when it becomes ruins as time passed, so that it will become the symble of our time to be retained by people after us.By studying the methods of reviving ruin-landscape and Design-with-Ruin-Crisis landscape design method, it concluded city memory is not only something needed to protect but also something needed to create actively. Only in this way could the city memory be able to keep lasting.
