The intangible cultural heritage is the achievement of people's great intelligence and creativity. It represents the most special historical memory of every nationality. Each great regional intangible cultural heritage has its own specific existence of physical space, which provides it with soil and air for it to develop and continue. The physical space plays a very important role in inheriting and developing of folk traditional cultural. Therefore, how to protect and renew the physical space of the intangible cultural heritage scientifically is the main point of this thesis. In Oct.17,2003,the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage passed by UNESCO,with subsequent documents and ordinances for protecting the intangible cultural heritage in our country, indicates that all of the world are paying more and more attention on the intangible cultural heritage and doing a lot of protecting projects. However, less attention is paid on the physical space of the intangible cultural heritage.Studies in this area are just at the starting point. This thesis is based on the existing protection theory of China and foreign countries,is inspired by accessible investigations of practical examples in China, summarize the methods and analyze the problems and limitation. Then I will use this theory into practice and explore the principle and design methods in practical protection projects by referring the experience in the protection and renewal design of the physical space of Fengxiang Liuying clay sculpture. Finally,I will integrate my practical experience with the study result of predecessors and provide a new approach of protecting and renewing the physical space of intangible cultural heritage.I hope this would offer theoretical and practical reference and basis for future similar architectural designs in some extent.
