Short-limb wall (SLW) structure which absorbs the merits of frame structure based on the general shear wall structure is a new structure type in recent years, and it has wide application in the design of high-rise residential structures. The SLW is the shear wall that the ratio of section height and thickness is from 5 to 8. The SLW has the property of more economical, flexible layout and easy to meet the architectural requirements in that it has the shorter wall limb. The technical specification for concrete structures of tall building (JGJ3-2002) makes a number of provisions for this trend and requirement. However, some problems was found in the course of practical applications and need to be solved. For example, whether a large number of small wall limbs can be used; if the structure has only"few"SLW, whether the requirements of JGJ3-2002 7.1.2 can be not meet, and how to define the"few"; Because the provision of special-shaped column and small wall limb can be not distinguished, how to define and use them.In this paper, according to the theoretical analysis of shear wall with symmetric double short limbs, the formula of the smallest limb section height, thickness and clear span to depth-ratio of coupling beam for symmetric coupled SLW was derived. In order to ensure the coupled SLW or the wall with small openings which has better seismic performance can be designed, the provision about the ratio of height and thickness (5~8) must be strictly enforced. The clear span to depth-ratio of coupling beam can be as another controlling parameter for enhancing the seismic performance of SLW structure. The seismic performance of small wall limb and short-limb shear wall was analyzed. The design proposals of SLW structure were put forward, and examples were given for the reference of engineering design.
