As one of the most important factors which affected the security of the water supply system, water hammer has been much concern in these years, and the technology of the water hammer analysis has increasingly improved. However, with the development of both automatic control technology and the study of the inverse problems of the water hammer, the accuracy and flexibility of water hammer analysis need to improve. Although traditional methods of water hammer analysis able to accurately predict the instant pipeline system pressure fluctuations, they can not accurately reflect the water hammer decay process. At the same time, the traditional water hammer calculation procedures face challenges of flexibility and applicability.In this paper, through the introduction of Brunone unsteady friction model and combined with the method of characteristics, establishing the characteristic equation of this model. the model was used for the water hammer analysis of a simple pipeline system. Numerical results were compared with results of traditional calculation method. Come to the conclusion: The Brunone unsteady friction model can not only accurately predict the instant system pressure fluctuations, but also accurately reflects the water hammer decay process.Finally, through a combination of engineering practice, dynamic simulation the pump-failure water hammer used the software FLOWMASTER. Dynamic simulation results were compared with results of traditional calculation method .The results prove that the application of this software to simulate the water hammer is feasible, and showed the flexibility and applicability of FLOWMASTER.
