With the continuous increasing of vehicle running speed, the effect of cross-wind onthe vehicle handling and stability becomes more and more important. The traditionalresearch on cross-wind stability mainly depends on real vehicle experiments; it isdangerous and cost a lot of money and time. So the research on cross-wind stabilityof high-speed vehicle based on computer simulation is significantly helpful.Firstly this paper builds a 3 DOF vehicle model which is under the effect ofcross-wind, and then this model is used to analyze the impact of wind pressure centerposition on the steady-state gain of vehicle yaw velocity. Then, a multi-body vehicle dynamics model exposed to cross-wind is established inthe ADAMS software platform. The effects of step gust on a straight line drivingvehicle are simulated with this model, and some conclusion has been made about howthe cross-wind affects vehicle stability. At last, cross-wind sensitivities of some vehicle design parameters are studied, andsome important parameters have been singled out, which offer important referencedata for optimizing vehicle handling stability under cross-wind.In conclusion, some inherent rules and relations of high-speed vehicle stability arerevealed in this paper. Furthermore, some measures for the improvements ofcross-wind stability are obtained. And the results offer important reference data foroptimizing vehicle handling stability under the effect of cross-wind.
