Sustainable development is a new concept of development, accepted by people all around the world, which is the results of long think and explore for themselves. With continuous increase of economy in our country, continuously deepen in urbanization, big cities are faced with the problems such as traffic congestion, traffic accidents, air pollution and so on, which have already restricted the sustainability of urban society, economy and environment. Urban passenger transportation is an important condition for the development of urban society and economy, but how to achieve sustainable development of urban passenger transportation by optimizing passenger transportation mode is a new problem and of great value of research. On the basis of theories of sustainable development and sustainable city, the relationship urban transportation and society, economics, resources and environment is expounded. And this paper analyzes the motive mechanism of sustainable development for cities. And the concept of urban transportation mode and the structure of transportation system are made clear. Then, on the basis of analyzing the status quo of urban transportation mode in China and its development trend and the main factors which influence the urban transportation mode the blueprint of optimizing the urban transportation mode is put forward. For establishing the guideline system, the degree of contribution is valued with AHP. The result can be used as the value vector. An LP mode is established in order to maximize the urban transportation efficiency. And then, restrictions and parameters of the model are analyzed. At last, Chongqing is taken for example, and the countermeasures and advices are given with pertinence.
