With increase of the sizes and complexity of the modern power systems, the possibility of fault occurrence is increasing in the power grids. The power grid fault need to be located and isolated, and the non-faulty area need to be restored rapidly. In this thesis, the fault diagnosis and restoration methods are investigated in regional power grids. Based on the practical situation, the fault diagnosis and restoration system of Cangzhou grid is designed, and the interface program to the EMS and SCADA is developed. Based on the existing SCADA and EMS, integrating several fault diagnosis and restoration methods, the designed system makes full use of the existing available monitoring information. It can obtain power grid real-time data and protect alarms from SCADA, and obtain the parameters, topological structure and graphics of the power grid from the EMS. Based on the information from SCADA and EMS, a suitable fault diagnosis and restoration algorithm id derived for the Cangzhou power grid. The research results of this thesis can be used as guidance to development of fault diagnosis and restoration system, and will have positive influences to the safe operation and power quality improvement of the regional power grids.
