A large part of urban road traffic jams is due to inadequate capacity of flat intersections, which are one of the most frequently traffic bottlenecks of urban road network. Especially for some major flat intersections, it is important for blocking traffic jams that how to increase their intersection capacity and traffic capacity, reduce traffic delays in the intersection. The major flat intersection crossed by urban secondary road or higher, its layout has been stereotyped. In this case, it is significant that adopting transport organizational optimization methods to develop intersection inherent capability mostly degree.The paper based on "study on road traffic jams investigation and blocking measure in Beijing", which is The Beijing Traffic Development Research Center Project. It apply multi-discipline knowledge comprehensively, such as traffic engineering, systems engineering, computer application, through theoretical summary and analysis, field traffic surveys, data-process computing and micro-traffic simulation to study on traffic organized optimization of major flat intersection, including mainly the following aspects:In the beginning, the paper defines the major flat intersection based on GB-Urban Road Traffic Planning and Design Standards. It analyzes the characteristics of major intersection traffic flow though three aspect: vehicle flow, non-vehicle flow and pedestrian flow.Secondly, the paper discusses traffic organized optimization measures of major flat intersection, according to the characteristics of its traffic flow, it provides the methods setting up vehicle area to be driving turn-left or straight to improve the traffic capacity for vehicle flow; for non-vehicle flow, it provi'es the methods setting a forward stop line and bicycle across the street tw)ce crossing to reduce conflicts with vehicle and improve the traffic capacity; for pedestrian flow, it provides pedestrian twice crossing to the street, and analYzes its signal setting to make sure pedestrian safety at road junctions.Thirdly, the paper design concrete traffic survey programs and collect data of the actual traffic characteristics tnder Guanyuan Bridge major flat intersection, combined with channelized iltersection and the status signal, it focus on optimization program of improving vehicle traffic capacity-set up vehicle area to be driving turn-left or straight, then calculating the program impaction to traffic capacity. Finally, it argues the rationality and feasibility of optimization program in the major flat intersection by using micro-traffic simulation tool VISSIM.
