Asphalt surface treatment has been broadly adopted as a main pavement type of roads with low or medium traffic and a maintenance method for asphalt pavement. However, a systematic asphalt surface treatment design and performance evaluation method is still not available in china, which made asphalt surface treatment suffer from aggregate loss, pitting surface and bleeding because of improper aggregate and bitumen dosage. This paper analyzes the asphalt surface treatment design parameters, conducts experimental research on Mclead design method, Kearby design method and South Africa design method, and gets the conclusion that the South Africa method, which has a certain theoretical basis, shows better road performance. On the basis of the above work, this paper adjusts the South Africa design method in accordance with Chinese climate and traffic characters, and then presents a proper asphalt surface treatment design and evaluation method for Chinese status. Meanwhile, the paper takes experimental research on the influencing factors for asphalt surface treatment performance incluing the raw material, temperature, moisture, dust, aggregate pretreation .embedment depth and rolling delay. The results show that that all the above factors can influence the asphalt surface treatment performance on different degrees. For this reason, in the design and construction of asphalt surface treatment, the climate, traffic and material characters should be comprehensively considered in order to enhance the road performance of asphalt surface treatment.
