Large scale connective power grid requires a higher quality of power system relay protection equipment and security and stability control equipment. With the rapid development of wide area communication networks and the application of synchronized phase measurement unit, Wide Area Protection System which uses wide area information has been widely concerned by electric power researchers. Wide Area Protection System gets information of the power system by communication networks, and coordinated control it. The performance of the communication networks is the key to realize Wide Area Protection System. So it is important to research on physical carrier, transfer mode and analyze the communication technologies which improve the performance of the wide area communication network.In this thesis, the research status of wide area communication networks has been summarized. The difference between different physical carriers has been compared. The Principles and characteristics of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarch) and MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) which are widely used in wide area communication networks has been analyzed. In the thesis, the communication system of Wide Area Protection System of an actual power system has been researched, using optical fiber as physical carrier and IP over SDH as transfer mode, and using MPLS technology to improve the performance of it. The simulation model of the communication system has been modeling in OPNET, and many different situations have been simulated. The result of the simulations shows that the communication system found in this thesis can satisfy the requirement of Wide Area Protection System, and the use of priority technology and DiffServ which realized by MPLS can improve the real-time performance. It also shows that the use of MPLS technology can realize the flow control of the network and self-recovery when communication link failure, it can improve the reliability of the communication network of Wide Area Protection System. The research in this thesis provides a reference for the design of communication system of Wide Area Protection System.
