Further promotion of smart grid has lead to the expansion of region, higher of the voltage, more complex of the system, more accurate of the control. All of those progresses have brought a greater challenge to the stability of power grid, it’s easier to break down than before, and the requirement of relay protection is more stringent. Wide-area protection system can make up the disadvantage of incomprehensive by collecting the related domain wide-area information, so it’s very important of achieving the information interaction between wide-area protection and control system. The first target of achieving the safety of grid is to unify the wide-area protection and control system by combining the wide-area information, by collecting all kinds of electrical information widely, transmitting those information to the control system through the electric power communication network, and synthesizing all kinds of protection algorithms to send instructions on grid. Above all, research on information transmission and interaction between wide-area protection and control system occupies an important position in the study of wide-area protection.This paper mainly completed the research on information transmission and interaction between wide-area protection and control system. First of all, classify the wide-area protection data to understand the affecting factors of wide area protection communication, discuss the characteristics of different physical medium and technologies of communication, analysis the requirements of communication system, in order to put forward a communication mechanism which can meet the requirements. And then, modeling the system based on IEC61850 standard refers to the actual wide-area protection system, to describe the interaction of electrical information and motion information between two substations, and modeling the communication service at the same time. Finally, simulate in OPNET of the communication mechanism that brought out with the actual system, especially on the communication time delay and packet loss rate, to verify whether the communication mechanism meets the requirement of information transmission between wide-area protection and control system or not.
