Based on the present state of the existing coal hopper wagon at home and abroad and the design experience and operation state of C32 coal hopper wagon exported to Australia in batch, new design method, technology and test methods are applied to optimize the structure and study the NHWH coal hopper wagon for Australia. By thus, the objective parameters of tare weight of 25.4t, loading capacity of 95t and tare weight coefficient of 0.267 can be reached; the design objective of increasing the loading capacity of wagon and improving safety and reliability of wagon can be reached.In this paper, the present development state of coal hopper wagon at home and abroad is stated first. The structure and parameters of coal hopper wagon designed and manufactured in different ages are introduced. With the development of new material, new technology and new manufacture workmanship plus the continuous improvement of fitting parts for railway wagons, the development of large axle-load coal hopper wagon is imperative under the situation.Beginning with the design parameter and structure selection, the investigation, structure optimization and calculation analysis for coal hopper wagon at home and abroad are conducted to confirm the design scheme of this wagon.Wagon design's development has enhanced the vehicle applying reliability from satisfying the strength standard to prediction of fatigue life. The paper discussed that the fatigue failure is one of the inactivation and the purpose of the fatigue design. According to the carbody static strength calculation, vehicle dynamics analysis, the paper using the system of the wagon prediction of fatigue life, finite element analysis technic and AAR standard's load spectrums obtains the dynamic stress of the time history.Finally, the paper introduces the carbody static strength test , the method of vehicle dynamics test, the procedure of test and test result. Along with the research of this coal hopper wagon, it makes progress about our box wagon.
