At first, this paper briefly introduces the coal wagons in other countries, recalls the history for development of domestic wagons and discusses the necessary condition and significance for the study of new generation of 70t coal open top wagon. With striding up development of China railways, capability of railway freight service has been enhanced in large scale, however, it still can't satisfy the great need of freight service. To research and develop the new generation of special coal open top wagon with loading capacity of 70t and axle load of 23t must be carried out so as to satisfy the requirement of technical policy of MOR and enhance the coal transportation capability of the existing railway line owned by Shenhua Corp.Based on the research and study on the existing railway track, the bridge, the terminal, loading and unloading facility owned by Shenhua Corp., considering the actual need of the customer and the current condition, the wagon structure is optimized with implementation of new material, new process and new technology and careful selection of principal performance parameters and structure. In doing so, has it settled the compatible problem between the wgon and the dumper and long term quality problem in service, and design scheme of the wagon is finalized. Not only the design scheme can reduce the tare weight of the wagon, but also can it enhance the loading capacity of the wagon, and the sound dynamic performance and high efficiency of dumping and unloading as well. Both the economic benefits and social benefits will be achieved significantly.For design scheme, FEA has been done including the strength analysis and rigidity analysis. Based on such analysis, the design scheme has been improved to some extent. In order to enhance the reliability of the wagon, the fatigue life forecast has been performed on the basis of Miner linear accumulated damage theory and AAR standards, and the platform for fatigue life forecast developed by QRRS. Such analysis calculation and evaluation result provides the theoretical basis for optimizing the structure and finalizing the design scheme.In the end, the paper presents the detailed information regarding to the test approach, the test procedure and test results in terms of the static strength and rigidity test of the wagon body, the dynamic test and compatible test with the dumper. It indicates that the rolling stock performance and service reliability has been further enhanced, the design of the wagon becomes more scientific and rational. Frankly speaking, this necessary study has played a very important role in research and developemtn of C70A type coal open top wagon.
