Along with the expanding scale of the electrical power system, its running status is also getting more and more complicated. The power system operators need to deal with the massive data in the work. Meanwhile, more and more analysis results have been generated continuously because of the widespread use of Energy Management System (EMS).It can't satisfy the actual need by the existing data display mode for the Power Operating System. So it becomes the hardest question to lighten operators working intensity and improve the working efficiency by showing the massive data more properly during the running state and rapidly increase the interaction performance. The running state Visualization of Power System was born against this background. It is refers to using the technologies of visuahzation in Scientific Computing to demonstrated the systems operation state by the graph or the image way that makes the systems operation personnel to be more convenient It means the system operators understood the current running status more conveniently and directly and they can choose the pointed way to control the state at the first time. The Visualization in Scientific Computing technology is a new research field which is proposed along with the development of computer technology in the last few years of 1980s. It mainly focuses on the computing method which can change the data to the information that people can understand. In recent years, the technology becomes more mature in Power System and solves many data-display problems.On the basis of Power System's own characteristic and the actual request, this article commentated on the existing technologies (such as geography demarcation line chart line flow pie charts, animated flows, voltage gauge and so on) by referring numerous domestic and foreign papers related and pointed out the insufficiency of each kind of technology and the improvement strategy. This article designed and finished the standard graphic layer by the cooperation of the IES-Lab company, and then implemented several visualization methods based on SGL, including animated flows, contouring bus data and so on. Besides, the method of contouring bus data is based on interpolating cubic curves. Moreover, this article proposed an algorithm to pick up object in a 3D environment by rendering to a float texture based on GPU. The main idea of the algorithm is appending the pointer information to the texture while rendering the scene by modifying the rendering process. At last, the algorithm finished the picking process by getting a copy of screen and then locking to the table of texture. The algorithm can complete the picking judgment operation in a shorter time than the ray-intersection method if the situation or the scene does not alternate fast. More important, the new algorithm realized picking precision with the same level of the screen pixel element which is more precise than the ray-intersection method.The algorithm based on GPU will be more useful in the future because of the rapid development of the hardware. Besides, the algorithm of the contour line realized the expected goal and satisfied the need of the company.
