The study takes the the high fills culvert as an experimental segment , which lies in k26+710 of the highway from Wu Pu to Zhi Zhou. The EPS(Expand Polystyrene) blocks are laid down to the top and side of the culverts as reducing-load measures to research rigid culverts applied in civil engineering. Main research contents on culverts which have reducing-load measures or not, and have but different EPS thickness are as follows: magnitude and distribution of vertical earth pressure on the top of culverts and their change with fills height; magnitude and distribution of horizontal earth pressure on the side walls of culverts and their change with soil-filled height; magnitude of settlement difference between culvert body and filled side and their change with soil-filled height. The finite element computation is carried out with the ANSYS software, and the result is compared with the scene actual result according to the calculation data of experimental culverts. Calculation results of all kinds of theories formula, experience methods about earth pressure of culverts are compared with measure data. Merits and shortcomings of these methods are discussed, and formulas that solve earth pressure of culverts are suggested. Through deducing theories, calculation formulas about horizontal earth pressure in the condition of having reducing-load material EPS are suggested, and the earth pressure theory which basis on the differential settlement±δbetween inner filled column and outer filled column are enriched. Finally, takes this experimental culverts as an example to redesign the structural of the culvert in the condition of having reducing-load measures, compared with both project construction cost, to prove a new way of designing culverts have economic value. This results can be provided for culverts engineering design, also can be used as revision basis of design criterion and manual of relevant section.
