Rotary kiln is a kind of large-scale thermo-equipments for material sintered, which widely is used in cement, papermaking, environmental protection, metallurgy and other industries. During the process of rotary kiln production, the most critical process is material sintered in burning zone, which has a direct impact on product yields and qualities. Therefore, temperature measurement and monitoring of burning zone often play a very important role on the production process.As the material sintering is a very complex physical and chemical process, the traditional control scheme can not be applied because of the features of rotary kiln such as strong interference, large time lag, nonlinearity and difficulty to establish accurate mathematical model. In practical production artificial monitoring is often applied, but the labor intensity of workers and working environment is usually poor, monitoring results also have considerable randomness. The fire images collected from the rotary kiln head contain a lot of burning zone temperature information, in this article, digital image processing techniques are applied to extract image characteristics from the rotary kiln images which reflect material sintering status and burning zone combustion status to acquire the temperature information of rotary kiln so that operating workers could take further control operation.First, an improved region growing approach which could seek growing seed automatically is applied for color images segmentation in this article in order to acquire fire images from burning zone, then calculated the motion mode used by optical flow approach on two segmented sequence frames, finally analyzed the materials sintered condition. The principal assumption, algorithm categories and research results in recent year of optical flow are outlined in first half of the paper, an improved optical flow approach which is based on HSI color model is proposed in this article, it has merits such as high accuracy and obtaining dense optical flow field. This method is used in a number of practical color flame images of the rotary kiln, the experimental results show that it is effective to apply the method proposed in this article to detect the temperature of burning zone of rotary kiln through the images processing technology.
