In electric power system, insufficient or surplus reactive power will affect the quality of the supplied power severely. By appropriate compensation, the power factor of the system is kept at a higher level to improve the quality of the system. The reactive power compensation technique is one of the major researches. As the advance and development of the technique, the reactive power which various device need increase continuously and the reactive power distributed in the power network become more complicated, so the requirement to the reactive power become higher and higher.When the power supply system is on the stat of working, the reactive power will increase greatly because of the existence of inductive load. In recent years, a lot of departments have taken effective measures to spread the using of various newly rectifying equipments, which have decreased the power loss, but in the meantime others problems are caused such as power factor decreasing, voltage fluctuating or abruptly changing, three phase unbalance and harmonic interference etc.. As a result, the efficiency of the distribution system can not be well used, and the additional power loss of equipments will increase. Undoubtedly, it is imperative to do more research work on reactive power compensation technique. This paper proposes magnetically controlled reactor reactive power compensation equipment based on DSP. It can compensate the system reactive power quickly according to the reactive condition to improve the stability of the system and keep the given power factor.This paper gives a detailed analysis of the magnetically controlled reactor. The harmonic character and the control character of MCR are analyzed for the actually used MCR, which should be automatic controllable. The article presents a controller which uses a DSP, and also designes the measure circuit, processes circuit, trigger circuit, as well as displays circuit. The measuring circuit is used to measure voltages and currents of circuit; the process circuit is applied to calculate the control outputs with the measured signal and the input parameter according the relevant control scheme; the trigger circuit produces the pulses to trigger the thyristors with the control output; the display circuit can show states of the system intuitionisticly. The loop - locked PI control method is adopted in the control strategy to make the power factor of the system achieve the appointed one. The software flow of the control system is also introduced simply.This paper also presents experiments to test the device, and gives waves of current. The results of experiments are quitely accordant with the analysis in the article, and show the correctness and feasibility of the reactive power compensation device of this article.
