In order to predict the ship's maneuverability in restricted water for ship handlers and for purpose of ship's safety, the research works about two ships that involved overtaking or heading-on in restricted water are very important. To establish the ships' maneuvering mathematical model in narrow shallow waters, we must fully consider the shallow water effect, bank effect and interaction effect between ships. This thesis tries to establish such a mathematical model of this kind and put such a model into the ships' maneuvering motion simulation equation. The current latest research result for ship's interaction is a kind of genetic semi-theoretical and semi-empirical model given by KS Varyani. The model can also readily be used by simulation program developers to simulate the worst possible scenarios. It is also more accessible to a navigator, master, or pilot, who could use it on a palmtop computer by keying in a few numerical estimates of the size, position, and speed of the neighboring ship and receive almost instant aneous results. In this thesis, for purpose of ship's interaction simulation motion in narrow shallow water, the interaction model given by KS Varyani was adopted, together with taking account of the shallow water effect and bank effect. This thesis expatiated how to build the mathematical model for ship's motion based on the MMG model and wrote the programs for simulation of two ships'motion during meeting with Mat-lab language. Firstly, this thesis proved the established mathematical model to be satisfied for simulation of ship's motion in narrow shallow water. Secondly, this thesis simulated two ships' overtaking and head on situations at different initial separation distance, water depth, ship speed, ship length by using the above established mathematical model. Thirdly, this thesis made systematic research on course keeping rudder angles when two ships meeting in narrow shallow water and obtained conclusions which may provide theoretically references for ship handlers.
