Train traction and braking performance is the most important characteristic of the train, which is an important basis for the design of train traction drive system. It is also a comprehensive assessment index of the High-speed EMU traction drive system which is a multi-variable, nonlinear and strong coupling system. This paper researches the performance of train traction and braking for CRH2-300 EMU which is one of the high-speed EMU series introduced firstly by our country. The research of this paper is conducive to the development of china's High-speed railway system.This paper firstly analyses the present situation of High-speed EMU at home and abroad, according to the characteristics of China's railway operations, and proposes technical requirements for the introduction of EMU. It is basis on the train traction calculation theory, as CRH2-300 EMU the research object, analyses the structure of its traction drive system and operational principle in traction and regenerative braking. The traction and braking performance of CRH2-300 EMU is researched and analysed, in a measure calculating traction performance characteristics including adhesion traction, running resistance, the traction feature and so on, Another calculating braking performance characteristics for example braking force, braking distance and regenerative braking characteristics. The results show that the maximum traction force of CRH2-300 EMU meets the adhesive constraints; at the initial velocity 300 km/h the emergency braking distance is 2786.68m, which meets the requirements of Railway Technology policies and regulations. Regenerative braking performance shows that the regenerative braking force's limit value is no more than adhesion value, and meets the design requirements.Finally, according to CRH2-300 EMU's traction characteristics and regenerative braking feature, find out the characteristics of each traction motor, calculating the components of its traction drive system in traction conditions and when regenerative braking conditions respectively capacity. Under the traction motor characteristics, discusses on electric traction the asynchronous traction motor vector control strategies, and use of Matlab /Simulink to build their simulation model. The simulation results verify the traction motor characteristics and CRH2-300 EMU traction characteristics, it means that constant starting torque, constant power operation consistent with traction characteristics.
