| With their unusual design and building, the ancient cities in China are of great importance to the history of world city construction. The planning of those cities has a distinct regional character. For example, the cities in Loess Plateau of Northern Shaanxi, which originated in a deep historical culture and special natural environment, have created a variety of unique urban patterns. Their design, proving a profound wisdom of Chinese human settlement, has made a significant contribution to local human settlement construction. The designing & planning styles of the ancient cities in China have been a hot topic in academic research, in which people have also achieved fruitful results. However, the research on the recognition and quantitative analysis of the integration of city and Shan-Shui environment is comparatively insufficient.Therefore, this essay conducts researches, through quantitative and qualitative analysis, on the planning theory and method of urban pattern with Shan-Shui environment in Yan'an city.Based on the theory of sciences of Human settlement, this paper carries out a document analysis and field research in the aspect of the development of urban patterns, city site selection, city construction, axis location, city location, road alignment and landmarks to examine the relationships between key elements of urban patterns and Shan-Shui environment, as well as the urban culture; to discuss people and environment, and people in the environment; and therefore, to embody the culture of urban Shan-Shui environment. It's pointed out that scholars in Yan'an city are the key persons creating urban Shan-Shui environment. It's also stated in the essay that the ancient cities in China, designed by urban patterns combing qualitative and quantitative analysis, are endowed with integrated cultural meaning and construct an urban cultural space, which is a dynamic creation and a gradually integrated product of people's constant pursuit of urban pattern and Shan-Shui environment.By tracing the origin and analyzing the design for ancient cities, this paper reaches a conclusion that designers should be more open in applying their body of knowledge. It's suggested that the key issue of protecting the historical cultural environment of the city is to take into consideration of both ancient cities and surrounding Shan-Shui environment. It's proposed that the traditional features of Shan-Shui guide the new city construction, the core of which is protecting Shan-Shui, reading Shan-Shui and pleasing Shan-Shui; develop a modern urban Shan-Shui pattern in accordance with the order of social life. |
