The rapid development and wide applications of Wide-area measurement provide great potential for online assessment of voltage stability in large-scale power systems. In this paper, an on-line voltage stability index based on wide area measurement and theπequivalent branch model is expound. the physical meaning of the index, namely the virtual active margin index (IVAM) was propose. Through theoretical analysis and simulation analysis of the IEEE 14 standard example, found the problem of IVAM we propose a novel on-line voltage prediction index considering the trends in IVAM for real-time voltage stability analysis. The on-line voltage prediction index have been tested on IEEE39 standard example, then applicated in actual power grid. Because of its computational simplicity, the proposed algorithm is very fast and therefore applicable in on-line protection schemes. It also provide a quantitative basis for formulate plan to prevent voltage collapse.
