The flashover mechanism of iced insulator strings is similar with the one of contamination insulator strings. It is caused by leakage current. The movement and development of leakage current are the main factors to become final flashover. To comprehensive monitoring the movement and development rule of leakage current, it is helpful to analyze the flashover mechanism of iced insulator trings, and observe the occurrence and development process of electric arc. According to the characteristic and measured requirement of leakage current of 500 kV transmission line iced insulator strings, this paper designs a leakage current monitoring system of iced insulator strings based on fiber optic transmission technical. Hardware and software are all developed. At last, a lot of experiments of icing flashover characteristics of energized EHV transmission line insulator strings are done in this paper. The icing flashover leakage current is measured, and great amount test datas are processed and researched in this paper.
