Due to flexible power range, independent operation, simply controlling of power transmission direction and perfect transmission line, HVDC light transmission technology gets more and more attention. HVDC light transmission line adopts HVDC cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable which has light weight, small volume, perfect electrical properties, friendly circumstance and simplified maintenance. China has rich wind, solar, tidal energy source, by which the power produced can adopt the best transmission mode——HVDC light transmission. So research on one of HVDC light transmission technology, HVDC XLPE cable and accessory will be valuable.The paper follows theory design, simulation and optimization, experimentation, gradually researches, and finally comes into the complete design system of HVDC XLPE cable and accessory. Part of theory brings forward a detailed design scheme of HVDC XLPE cable and accessory and offers the theory basis for calculation of electric field distribution in insulation. Part of simulation and optimization takes the design of±30 kV DC XLPE cable and accessory for example, simulates and calculates the electric field distribution at normal and"polarity inversion"cases. The shape of stress cone, conductivity parameter coordination etc. also has been optimized. Part of experimentation studies the space charge accumulation of cable insulation materials by pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method, according to which the basis for choosing cable insulation materials has been pointed out. The effect of temperature to accessory insulation materials'properties has been researched in terms of space charge, tensile and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Finally, conduction current property of cable and accessory insulation materials has been researched by three-electrode method and interface space charge property between cable insulation and accessory insulation has been researched by PEA method, with which the result could be compared.The paper successfully accomplishes the design of HVDC XLPE cable and accessory with a view to the line of theory design, simulation and experimentation. The achievements of the research will surely offer some references for Chinese HVDC light transmission technology.
