Reactive power is an important to voltage stability, which contributes a lot to the safety of operating power system. Reactive power compensation is effective to the stable operating of power system.A reactive power compensator based on FPGA is proposed in this paper. The theory of reactive power compensation is discussed. Altera Cyclone-III FPGA, which is high speed and low consumption, is employed as the core processor of the compensator. ADE7758 is used for data acquisition and analysis. It integrates active and reactive power calculation, which simplifies the process of data analysis. The principle of nine-zone diagram for reactive power compensation is introduced. And nine-zone diagram is improved to meet the strategy of reactive power compensation. It enables the voltage stable, reactive power balanced and regulation reduced.The reactive power compensator realizes the adjustment of control parameters and switching of control mode. The configuration of the compensator is easy and the real-time performance is good. The field operating of the compensator shows that the data shown by the controller is correct, the capacitor switching and transformer tap adjustment are proper controlled.
