In recent years, with the continuous development of China’s power industry, one of the widest range of high voltage transmission network in the world has been formed in China. In the other hand, enterprises, business circle and the formation of society put forward higher requirements to power quality, at the same time also to power grid reactive power requirement is becoming more and more strict. Power grid reactive power imbalance will lead to huge fluctuation in the system voltage, will cause serious damage to the electrical equipment and system’s voltage collapse accident. Reactive power is to set up an alternating current magnetic field and the needed power. Under the condition of the active power unchanged the existence of the reactive power will reduce power factor increases apparent power to need to increase the capacity of power transmission equipment investment and power loss increase operating cost conveying pressure drop larger against power of transmission lines and the reasonable application.In order to resolve the problems due to the reactive power in power grid, people has been looking for appropriate optimization strategy to compensate reactive power. In this paper, we analyze the basic principles of compensate reactive power. By studying the various power system reactive power compensation strategy, aiming at the characteristics of urban power grid reactive power optimization strategy, we design the VQC method on the basis of theoretical analysis, researching and designing the transformer substation of reactive power compensation optimization scheme. We also introduce intelligent optimization algorithms into our optimization procedure to improve the final result.For examine the feasibility of our optimization strategy, we select a transformer substation and use the optimization method to compensate its reactive power. Based on the problems which we encountered in practice, the urban power grid reactive power optimization strategy is modified. The VQC strategy based on variable calculation method and regional figure is also designed. Finally, the complete scheme both on hardware and software is given, which is verified by feasibility and effectiveness in urban power grid reactive compensation.
