Recently, in the automotive steel wheel product design process, the failure mechanism on the steel ring is a lack of understanding, and the life of the steel ring can not be accurately predicted. The product design process often based on experience and analogy method, which are often too conservative and bound to result in material waste on the high speed of motor vehicles. Also the methods will increase the weight of motor vehicles and fuel consumption. People used some measures to optimize the structure of automobile steel wheel. Because the design data is discrete and the difference of optimization theory is big, while the lack of necessary experimental data to verify, its research result are often discrete in the actual application exist huge security risks.Therefore, in the design stage, it is necessary to automobile steel wheel failure mechanism of in-depth analysis. A reference criterion can be provided to predict its service life and formulate an automobile wheel regular test cycle for the replacement of existing security risks of automotive wheels. It has important practical significance to optimally design steel ring structure for enhancing product life and reliability of the steel ring.In this paper, the form of the main load and failure modes were analyzed. Automobile wheel is by the cyclic loading at work, so its main failure mode is fatigue damage. The wheel loads includes radial loads and lateral loads, and lateral loads is the main cause of fatigue damage. Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) was used to analyze the structure of automobile wheel. The service life of vehicles was predicted according bending fatigue damage caused by lateral loads by using previous research results, combined with the current design of advanced virtual simulation.In this paper, the reason of the failure of the steel wheels was analyzed. It has some certain theoretical and practical significance to guide the detection and the discard for automobile wheel on a regular basis. Its structure was optimized and a reasonable choice for the automotive steel ring structure parameters and structure design was achieved for the theoretical basis and experimental data.
