With the development of heavy-duty vehicles, all transmission and automotive manufacturers pay attention to automatic mechanical transmission (AMT), because of its low manufacturing cost, simple structure. But as the main vehicle powertrain component, the transmission needs the help of Shift Actuator to complete the gear shift. Shift actuator has five different types, such as sliding gears, gear sets, synchronizer, gear clutch and free wheel. And the synchronizer is widely used in automotive transmission. Based on the reference of the application results of synchronizer performance test-beds and books and literature at home and abroad, the paper gives a detailed analysis of the structure and working principle of the synchronizer, the mathematical model of the process of shifting engagement, several evaluation index of synchronizer assembly quality which is validated on the synchronizer performance test-bed.In order to establish a common mathematical model of the process of shifting engagement, with modern design methodology point of view, the paper analyzes the synchronizer structure according to the function, finds the key structural parameters and important assembly dimensions. The model includes the relationships between the synchronous torque and time, the shift force and time. The model also gives the synchronization condition and anti-lock condition, and explains the"Synchronize Interrupt".The paper gives comprehensive evaluation indicators of the assembly quality of Synchronizer. The ideal shifting process is labor-saving and quick, that is, the smaller of the product of the shift time and the shift force, the better. So, it's reasonable to evaluate with Shift Impulse. The paper also discusses the calculation method of Shift Impulse and programs some of the computer code. The final test shows that the results of the evaluation system are consistent with the results of the subjective evaluation. And the evaluation system can have an accurate evaluate on the assembly quality of AMT Shift Actuator.
