Long-span steel bridge construction was the focus of bridge construction. Pavement of long span steel bridge had a higher demand because of special force characteristics of orthotropic steel bridge decks. Pavement of long span steel bridge commonly used thin asphalt pavement. There were some diseases of the steel bridge in China in recent years.This article summarized the diseases in steel box girder bridges which had been used. According to disease types, characteristics, location, analyzed the reason of these diseases, proposed indicators of mechanical analysis. Analyzed a certain long span suspension bridge according to its structure and pavement type to be used, did bending test and fatigue test of pavement, and oblique shear test and fatigue test of the combination of pavement and steel parts according to mechanical analysis results, combined with previous long-span steel box girder bridge deck results. Tested whether the type of pavement to be adopted to meet the force requirements or not. Finally, proposed some methods to reduce disease of long span steel bridge.Got some conclusions as follows:(1) Main diseases of steel deck pavement in China were cracking, rutting, delamination or spalling damage, shear slip failure and so on. These diseases were mainly due to a lack of bonding layer shear, paving orthotropic steel bridge deck in the asphalt on the lack of anti-fatigue properties, the details of the construction process and the impact of heavy overloading.(2) Force of long-span steel box girder bridge deck main combined with characteristics of the local steel box girder. The most harmful position was in U-stiffeners, near the diaphragm and webs, selected maximum vertical and horizontal tensile strain on top surface of pavement and shear force of longitudinal and transverse on bottom surface of pavement as mechanical control targets according to the causes of diseases.(3) The pavement type to be used in this long span suspension bridge had good shear resistance and fatigue resistance according to the result of these tests.
