With the development of science and technology especially that of advanced manufacturing technology, people pay more and more attention to flexible manufacture. Flexible manufacturing system is a kind of highly automatous and highly flexible equipment, which applies computer technology,numerical control technology,network communication technology,modern production management technology and so on. FMS is developed on the basis of distributed numerical control system.The process of flexible production line is a dynamic process, parts flow is the most important one. Parts online identification is an indispensable part of monitoring system for most of the FMSs, it is the guarantee of reliable,efficient operation of the FMS.The discussion in this paper is based on Flexible Manufacturing Teaching System (FMTS) of NEU, also an ultrasonic parts online identifying system is designed for it, and the main part of the identifying system is single-chip microcomputer. Ultrasonic testing system which takes advantage of time difference method is firstly used in the field of industry. This paper advance a new method to distinguish parts with different material and different surface situation, this method depends on the strength of reflecting ultrasonic wave.This paper focuses on the following aspects:(1) Give a brief description about flexible manufacturing system and its monitoring subsystem of parts.(2) Give a detailed description about the structure and principle of embedded hardware of parts online identifying equipment, which base on the ultrasonic distance measurement and the strength of reflecting ultrasonic wave detecting system. (3) Describes the software development process of "automatic parts online identifying control center" which in the central-control computer.(4) The newly developed parts online identifying system is integrated to the existing product line, also a commissioning is processed.The debugging and experimentation of automatic parts online identifying system for FMTS of NEU has proved that this system is able to identify different kinds of parts and can be reliably operated in complex industrial environments. Practice has proved that these ultrasonic testing method can be used in the measurement,control field of industry. The goal has been achieved.
