The rapid growing of globaliztion in economy and trading, expands the market of shipping. It urges the great demand of cargo ships, among them, the panamax cargo ship with 80,000-dead-weight-ton(DWT) is very popular due to transitable for major canals wordwide and economy for operation. Concerned the global climate problem and the eviroment protection, study on saving fuels and operating a ship in economy and safely becomes an urgent mission. Research on the electric power system, one of key systems onboard ship, is valuable for accomplishing this mission.In this paper, the shipboard electric power system is researched and a design of such system for 80,000dwt cargo ship is proposed based on the consideratons of marine enviroment and operation characteristic. This paper discribed the principle of shipboard electric power distributions, the main components of system, the calculations of system key prarameters, the methods of equipment selection, the technics of system parameters setting. Electric load calculation and short circuit currents calculation are also discussed and simplfied for application, and analysis on operation modes of shipboard electric power system is made in details. The determination of main components capacities, the design of system protection, the solutions of system safe operation under faults, the evaluations of loading program, the design principle of power management are further discussed. The shipboard electric power system designed and discussed in this paper is finally accomplished with operating safely and in enconomy.Experiment results show that simplified and accurate calculation on electric loads and short circuit currents, application of efficient power management, designing suitable loading program and reliable operation solutions are the keys to minimize the capacity of generating sets, as well as operate ship safely and savingly.
