In recent years, since the highway traffic mileage and vehicle population have increased significantly, and our nation gaves more emphasis on traffic safety, traffic safety on the highway has improved greatly The level of road facilities and vehicle performance improve continuously, however, traffic accidents caused by the ancillary equipment and vehicles on road still appear frequently, which not only reduces the efficiency of our highway transportation, but also causes serious property damage and injury to life. The security level of protection facilities on highway has affect on the safety of driving on highway significantly. While, most studies on the security of protection facilities on the highway focus on the fence.and real full-scale crash test is dominant, other protection facilities and related incidents are studied rarely. In this paper, the research on collision accidents between large vehicle and curbs was conducted.By refering to concrete curb industry standards, curbs and truck models were built based on the virtual prototyping technology ADAMS. According to the relevant standards and information, six curbs including H1, F1, R1, RA3, RA5, and T1 were choosen. Testing velocities included 60 km/h,70 km/h,80 km/h and 90 km/h. Besides, impact angles included 10°,20°and 30°. According to automotive theory and related mechanics, crashes between truck and curbs were simulated in ADAMS/View, while truck trajectories and the changes of certain kinematic parameters before and after the collision were analyzed to demonstrate the protective performance of six curbs and analyze what the reasonable designs are. Based on testing results and conclusions, this paper proposed extended curb types-M1, M2, N1, N2. By conducting comparative experiment, advantages and disadvantages of M1, M2, N1 and N2 in the protective performance compared to RA3 were analyzed. It is expected that this paper provides a theoretical reference for curb designings and installation on highway, and reduces the damage of crashes on highway.
