Recently, because of frequent earthquakes, the damages of bridge are very common. To prevent collapse of the bridge structure and protect security of superstructure, the anti-seismic capability of bridge piers become particularly important. As a common form of bridge pier, the anti-seismic capability of reinforced concrete bridge piers depends on three factors, including the ductility capability, the bending resistance ability and the shear ability. There are many factors about the anti-seismic capability of reinforced concrete bridge piers, including section type and size, axial compression ratio concrete strength, longitudinal reinforcing steel's strength and ratio, transverse reinforcing steel's strength, ratio and forms, and so on.This article described the concept of ductility, ductility index, the development, advantages and disadvantages of seismic design. It introduced constitutive relationship model for cover concrete, confined concrete and steel, then introduced the methods to calculate the bending resistance ability, shear ability, time-analysis method and fiber beam element. This article selected the single pier model, analyzed the bending resistance ability and the ductility about main factors of the anti-seismic capability of reinforced concrete bridge piers by Xtract and Midas, then combined with the most commonly used formula of Priestley shear compared to its shear capacity calculation. It reached a certain conclusion, and on this basis, made some suggestions the ductility design of reinforced concrete bridge pier.
