A new set of indirect tensile strength tester (IDT) for geomaterial is developed, with the consideration of inhomogeneity of the inner structure of the samples, the ring samples are made for the tester. During test process, the radial compressive stress is applied on the inner side the sample and the tensile stress is generated along the tangential direction. After analyzing the test data, the tensile strength of the specimen can be obtained. The samples made of loess are used to verify the developed tester. The test results show that the test results from the developed tester are consistent very well with the traditional test method. The tensile test with asphalt mix samples are carried out with the developed indirect tensile strength tester and different loading stages are scanned with ICT successfully. With digital image processing method, the Computerized tomography image of asphalt concrete are transfer to finite element method, with which the micro-structure and non-uniformity of the asphalt concrete can be considered in the calculation. The mechanical parameters of different composites of asphalt concrete sample are input as calculation parameters. The mechanical response of the whole sample can be estimated through the FEM model on the basis of CT image process, the calculation results show that method presented can be a potential virtual simulation test for predication of mechanical response of geomaterial. The indirect tensile strength tester which we developed can be foundation for contrasting of virtual test simulations and real experiments.
