Residential indoor air quality which is an important indicator of a house's comfort and livability draws more and more attention nowadays, while the problems of poor indoor air conditions of rural houses are gradually becoming a hot issue. The rural houses in cold regions of China influenced by severe cold climate are under the factors of long-term energy shortages, building characteristics and special living habits of farmers. The indoor air quality of which is so bad that may threat people's health. To improve the indoor air condition of rural residential houses in cold regions, it is required a multidisciplinary and comprehensive study that contains not only the improvement of the energy utilization to control over the pollution of energy sources, but also the architectural design improvements, while also focus on the residential indoor ventilation. So this paper takes the ventilation strategies of rural houses in cold region as its main research subject. This paper carries out research in two ways. First is to define the situation of pollutants in rural houses through testing, and on this basis to determine ventilation demand and energy forecast derived by calculation and analysis. Second is to summary and integrate ventilation strategies and ventilation technologies suited to rural houses in cold regions, and to indicate viable methods which can improve ventilation defect of rural houses in winter, finally test the effectiveness of ventilation strategies through computer simulation. In the research of ventilation strategies for rural houses, this paper proposes to take ventilation design correctly under the premise of building air tightness, and to give full play to the superiority of natural ventilation. It also presents guidance for design of external environment, ventilation patterns and the setting of vents. To avoid ventilation defects in winter, this paper proposes specific strategies to preheat fresh air by using solar energy, ground heat source and heat producor inside the building, which could make building ventilation controllable. It also indicates methods to avert smoke reflux inside the kang. This paper verifies the feasibility of various ventilation strategies, of which the underground ventilation pipes which uses heated kang to preheat fresh air duct better-performing and have high comfort.
