Stone Matris Asphalt (SMA is called Splittmastixasphalt in Germany, or Stone Mixture Asphalt in America) was developed successfully and began to use in Germany. The world's first SMA road was built in the mid-1960s of Germany which has a history over 30 years and a good level of service. Many countries in Europe started using SMA in the 1970s to tackle heavy-load traffic and big pressure of tire. For good using effect SMA became popular throughout Europe. Only in 1990,the whole output in Europe was 300 tons. At present many European countries, especially the Nordic countries have already put SMA as a standard of asphalt mixture into standard, which is used for the upper layer. Now SMA has been popular asphalt mixture in European used in heavy traffic road, airport and port road, and widely spread in the world. From the 1990s, America introduced SMA technology from Europe, paved a batch of experiment sections and started large-scale system research.Considering its characteristic of climate, America makes great adjustment of SMA on the basis of Europe experience, including aggregate, asphalt, stabilizer, gradation and standards of design, which accords with the actual situation of the America. The SMA pavement technology has been developed to a new level.The introduction of SMA in 1990s has been greatly evaluated in practical application of our country, because of its excellent durability, skid resistance, high temperature stability and low temperature crack resistance. From 1998, Ministry of communications organized the business of technology extension. Beijing, Liaoning Province and other provinces began to spread SMA. In recent years, the technology has widely used in highway, municipal works, civil aviation and other industry.Jilin is one of the provinces which study and use SMA earlier. The technology was imported from Germany and studied formally in 1992. The experiment section was paved on the Meihekou-Caoshi highway-railway flyover in 1994 and good results were obtained. There are many highway pavement using SMA in Jilin Province, the overall situation is good. For the design, materials, construction and other factors, applications of this kind of road are some difference, and something must be done to estimate the true status of SMA in order to evaluate objectively and improve continuously. Supported by the projects of Changyu expressway, Songyuan-Baicheng highway and Tonghua-Liaoyuan highway, theoretical analysis of SMA's performance is conducted in this paper. In the basis of laboratory test, optimization design and experiment section verification, a gradation that suit to Jilin Province is proposed to make further recommendations and improvements in this province. The study has obvious pertinence and practical applicability to engineering practice of Jilin Province. It has a certain guiding significance which can make the quality of asphalt pavement improve generally. In addition, the technology bring about remarkable economic effectiveness and social benefits.
