Objective:(1)To investigate the leguminous medicinal plant resources in mountain Lao and classify them according to their chemical compounds and biological activities.(2)To study the effects of drought stress on plant growth, seed yield and seed quality of Cassia obtusifolia L. in pot conditions and provide a reference for quality control when cultivate it in field conditions.Method:(1) Using field investigation, specimen identification and document retrieval methods to study the leguminous medicinal plant resources in mountain Lao.(2) The parameters of plant growth, seed yield and seed quality of C. obtusifolia plants under different water availability including 90%(control), 70%(weak drought), 50%(moderate drought) and 30%(severe drought) of field water capacity were determined.Results:(1) 90 species of this family were found belonging to 42 genera, of which 43 species of them were of medicinal value with various pharmaceuticals and biological activities.(2)Water stress inhibited some plant growth attributes of C. obtusifolia(including shoot heights, shoot dry weights, number of branches, and number of leaves) significantly, and reduced seed yield attributes of C. obtusifolia(including pod numbers per plant, seed numbers per pod, 100-seed weights and seed-yield per plant) significantly, and decreased the contents of total protein and total sugar of C. obtusifolia significantly, and this effect was more pronounced with the severity of water stress. However, water stress(including the weak drought and moderate drought except severe drought) increased the anthraquinones content in the seeds of C. obtusifolia significantly, of which only weak drought treatments increased the harvest index of C. obtusifolia significantly.Conclusion:(1) The leguminous medicinal plant resources in mountain Lao were plentiful and with higher medicinal / food value.(2) Taking into account that anthraquinones is the main components that define the quality of C. obtusifolia, weak drought can improve the seed quality with the minimal deleterious impacts on the seed yield of C. obtusifolia.
