Taurine(Tau), as one of free amino acids, has cholagogic, liver- protective, sedative, anticonvulsive and antiarrhythmic effects. But as yet, no. report about its anti-inflammatory action and its pharmacological effects on respiratory system has come out. Therefore, the researches on the effects of anti-inflammation, antitussis, expectoration and antiasthma in Tau were carried out in this project. The experimental results showed as follows. Tau, administrated orally whether at a dose of 0.5 Og/kg BW or at 1 .OOg/kg BW, both displayed significant inhibitory actions on the auricle swelling and the permeability of skin capillaries in mice, and on the swelling of planta pedis and the content of PGE2 in the inflammatory tissues in rats; however, there was no difference about its action intensify between two groups at different dosage. The results also demonstrated that Tau could markedly inhibit the mice coughs induced by ammonia water and sulfur dioxide, obviously increase the secretion of phenolsulfonphthalein from the trachea portion of mice; that Tau could remarkably relieve the spasm of whole trachea in vitro induced by histamine phosphate and the spasm of whorled tracheal strip in vitro caused by 5- hydroxytryptamine and histamine phosphate in guinea pig.
