Synposis Low category classification of soils serves as a bridge between the soil classification and land use. On the basis of CST (Chinese Soil Taxonomy), low category classification of soils pays more attentions to the relationship between the soil series and landscape, inherits the merits of the soil genetic classification, and adopts both GIS (Geographical Information System) technique and SOTER's (Soil and Terrain Digital Database) principles & methods. So, low category classification of soils based on CST shows great significance not only in the regional land use properly, but also in consummating the system of CST and in the standardization, quantitation and international joint of soil classification as well. The author wishes such research could supply low category classification of soils, establishment of SIS (Soil Information System) & SOTER in mountainous-hilly areas including Fujian province with a use for reference and a necessary foundation. On the basis of the results researched before, such study selects coastal low-hilly area in zhangpu in southeast of Fujian province as its research zone, makes a low category classification of soils based upon CST and supported by GIS technique. After giving a deep insight into such research background and natural geographical conditions in research zone, this paper pays more attentions to low category classification of soils at the meantime of classifying the high category classification of soil based on CST, thus managing to classify five orders, five subgroups, eight families and fourteen soil series. Resorting to GIS technique and adopting SOTER's principles & methods and combining with the soil mapping principles as well, such research establishes the soil series database and finishes soil series mapping in research zone. Associated with the functions of soil series database and GIS, briefly analysis on the land-use position is done. Additionally, sustainable analysis has been made on fourteen soil series classified according to CST in terms of suitability of land-use, nutrients & moisture management in fields.
